Description
The Galle Dutch Fort, also known as the Galle Fort or Ramparts of Galle, is a seventeenth-century colonial fort in Sri Lanka. It is the largest remaining fortress in Asia constructed by any European imperial powers. The fort was first built in 1588 by the Portuguese and later rebuilt by the Dutch during the 17th century. It is a symbol of pride for the Galle City and was designated as a World Heritage Site by UNESCO in 1988. The museum is housed in a two-story Dutch colonial building dating back to the 17th century, which was once the commissariat store for the Galle fort. It highlights a range of exhibits from the Portuguese, Dutch, and British colonial periods along with traditional cultural artifacts of Sri Lanka.
